the 2016 FOG design + art fair

festival pavilion | fort mason center | san francisco, CA

14-17 january 2016

*my favorite artwork at the fair.  i’ve loved british artist, bridget riley, ever since i worked as a buyer for neiman marcus.  i worked at the corporate headquarters in Dallas, TX, where a bridget riley painting from the neiman marcus corporate art collection hung in the reception area of the executive offices.  i always admired it on the way to and from advertising or management meetings.

**my favorite stand at the fair.  expertly edited…

there is usually a showstopper room at the san francisco decorator showcase.  last year, it was the master bedroom by antonio martins interior design, who paneled the bedroom in blue and white portugese tiles, called azulejos.

this year, i thought that the dining room by cecilie starin design, with a black and white mural painted by street artist ian ross, was the most innovative room.

the street soirée dining room is also an homage to orlando diaz-azcuy, and the dining room that he designed for the 1998 san francisco decorator showcase.

do you think that the 1998 diaz-azcuy design could still be considered innovative?

will 2015 be a year of contrasts?

if color forecasts are any indication, then maybe so.  color authority pantone, a division of x-rite that provides professional color standards for the design industries, named marsala as the color of the year for 2015.

‘marsala is a color that exudes confidence and stability’

-leatrice eiseman, executive director of the pantone color institute®

sherwin-williams paints selected another red hue, coral reef, as the color of the year for 2015.

but, benjamin moore paints chose a complementary color, guilford green, as the 2015 color of the year.

could it be coincidental that sherwin-williams and pantone both featured red and green in their marketing materials?

or, that berry red is one of the colors that benjamin moore suggests to combine with guilford green.

when you mix complementary colors like red and green together, you create brown.

pantone is receiving mixed reviews for choosing a color with brown undertones, like marsala, as the color of the year for 2015.

PS.  now, ppg pittsburgh paints has announced that blue paisley is their 2015 COTY (color of the year).

could no trend direction be the trend direction for 2015?

radiant orchid

color authority pantone, has named radiant orchid the color of the year for 2014.  pantone, a division of x-rite, provides professional color standards for the design industries.

leatrice eiseman, executive director of the pantone color institute® associates orchid, which has purple, fushcia, and pink undertones, with creativity and originality.

wendy donahue, a chicago tribune newspaper columnist, describes the pantone color of the year as:

‘one part cultural indicator and one part marketing forecast.’

so from a marketing perspective, the color orchid could appeal to fashion conscious, tech savvy, 20-30 year old consumers because they value creativity and originality.  would you describe ‘it’ colors, such as orchid, or other fashion trends, such as ‘it’ handbags or ‘it’ shoes, as individualist?  or, as conformist?

people seem to either really like or really dislike purple.  so, orchid could be considered an individualistic color.  if you are an interior designer, orchid could seem too reminiscent of 1980’s mauve and teal color schemes to become ‘the new new thing’.

‘the kids are rocking an ’80s-comeback thing, but mauve is like the one thing I will never, ever embrace.’

-jonathan adler, potter, designer, and author

if you really like purple, would you use orchid as an accent color in a neutral interior design scheme?
